AWARD-WINNING OBERLIN CONTEMPORARY MUSIC ENSEMBLE IN CONCERT WITH PIANIST URSULA OPPENS |
||||||||||||
OCTOBER 22, 2002--The Oberlin Contemporary Music Ensemble (CME), under the direction of Associate Professor of Wind Conducting Timothy Weiss, will perform György Ligetis Concerto for Piano with the distinguished pianist Ursula Oppens Sunday, November 10, at 8:00 p.m. in Finney Chapel. Also on the program are Ligetis Ramifications (for 12 solo strings, 1968-69) and William Russells Chicago Sketches, featuring the Oberlin Percussion Group, led by Professor of Percussion Michael Rosen. This past June, at the American Symphony Orchestra Leagues (ASOL) 57th National Conference in Philadelphia, the CME received the First Place Award for Programming of Contemporary Music in the category of Collegiate Orchestras. This "Award for Adventurous Programming" was presented by the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers (ASCAP) and the ASOL. The CME focuses on music of the 20th century and on works by members of the faculty, guest composers-in-residence, and students. The ensemble has collaborated with composers Luciano Berio, John Harbison, Morgan Powell, Bernard Rands, Neil Rolnick, Christopher Rouse, Alvin Singleton, Steven Stuckey, Morton Subotnik, Judith Weir, and Judith Zaimont. The Awards for Adventurous Programming, initiated by ASCAP in 1959, recognize American orchestras whose programs demonstrate a strong commitment to the works of 20th-century composers. The Oberlin Conservatory of Music, founded in 1865, became part of Oberlin College in 1867. It is the oldest continuously operating conservatory in the United States, and the only major music school in the country linked with a preeminent liberal arts college. |
