WASHINGTON POST BOOK WORLD SENIOR EDITOR MICHAEL DIRDA TO SPEAK AT OBERLIN COLLEGE |

SEPTEMBER
17, 2002--Lorain, Ohio native and Pulitzer Prize winner Michael Dirda
will be the featured speaker at Oberlin College's Friends of the Library
annual dinner Saturday, September 28. Dirda's talk, "Looking for
a Good Time: Reading, Libraries, and the world of Books," will begin
at 8:00 p.m. in the Root Room of Carnegie Building (52 West Lorain Street).
His talk is free and open to the public. A writer and senior
editor for Washington Post Book World, Dirda received the Pulitzer
Prize for Distinguished Criticism in 1993. He holds a B.A., with highest
honors in English, from Oberlin College and an M.A. and Ph.D. in comparative
literature from Cornell University. Dirda reviews a wide range of books,
from intellectual history and innovative fiction to European literature
in translation, thrillers, and children's picture albums. He also writes
a monthly essay/literary entertainment column for Book World called
"Readings." A selection of these have been published as Readings:
Essays and Literary Entertainments (Indiana University Press). Dirda's writings have
also appeared in such publications as The Atlantic, the Times
Literary Supplement, Civilization, Encarta, The Chronicle of Higher Education,
and Smithsonian Magazine. He has also contributed critical essays
to scholarly volumes on detective fiction and science fiction and fantasy.
He frequently conducts public conversations with prominent visiting writers
for the Smithsonian Institution. He is currently on a leave from the Washington
Post while writing a memoir on how he became a reader and also a collection
