OBERLIN COLLEGE TO HOST CONGRESSIONAL ARTS AWARD CEREMONY APRIL 21

APRIL 9, 2003--Oberlin College will host an awards ceremony and reception honoring the winners of the 22nd Annual Congressional Art Competition Monday, April 21, at 5 p.m., in the atrium of the College’s Science Center, 130 West Lorain St.

The Arts Commission of Greater Toledo and Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur, in conjunction with Oberlin College and the Firelands Association of the Visual Arts, joined together to present the art competition, part of "Artistic Discovery," a nationwide activity initiated by members of the U.S. House of Representatives to recognize and encourage young people’s artistic creativity.

Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur will present the awards at the reception and acknowledge the participants, all high school students in the Ninth Congressional District. The event is free and open to the public.

On view through May 1 will be works by the winners, who include two Oberlin High School (OHS) students. Senior Marvin Locklear won first place with a charcoal drawing titled Othello and junior Johannes Jungschaeffer received an honorable mention for a self-portrait in oils. Both honorees have studied art with OHS faculty member Lorna Kretchmar since their freshman year.

This year Locklear also won the Superintendent's Award of Excellence in the Lorain County Schools juried show, two awards of excellence in the Northeastern Ohio Region of the Governor's Art Competition; and two Silver Keys in the National Scholastic Art Competition. Jungchaeffer received an award of excellence in the Northeastern Ohio Region of the Governor's Art Competition and a Silver Key in the National Scholastic Art Competition.

Locklear is the son of Rhonda and George Locklear, Jr. of Oberlin, and Jungschaeffer is the son of Dr. Helmut Jungschaefer and Lori-Taylor Jungschaeffer, also of Oberlin.

Locklear’s artwork will be placed on exhibition in Washington, D.C., for one year. Two runners-up will display their artwork for six months in Congresswoman Kaptur’s office in Toledo and in Washington D.C. All students whose works were selected will receive a Congressional Certificate indicating their artwork was in the competition.

This marks the first year OHS took part in the Congressional Art Competition. A total of 79 entries were received from 16 schools. OHS was the only school in Lorain County to compete; the remainder were in Lucas County.
