CONSERVATORY TO HOST MIDWEST COMPOSERS SYMPOSIUM

FEBRUARY 14, 2003--The Oberlin Conservatory of Music will be the scene of the next new thing when it hosts the 2002-03 Midwest Composers Symposium Friday and Saturday, February 14 and 15.

The 50-year-old symposium, held annually at one of the participating institutions, is the oldest such event for student composers in the United States, and it has showcased thousands of works by some the this country's most interesting young composers. This year’s symposium at Oberlin is sponsored and organized by the Conservatory’s Composition Department.

Student composers from Oberlin will be joined by those from the symposium’s participating institutions--Indiana University and the universities of Michigan, Illinois, and Iowa--for the two-day conference, and their works will take center stage.

Composition faculty members at each school choose which works will be brought to the table, but these are certain to include a work of chamber music and a work for a large ensemble.

The opening concert takes place Friday, February 14, at 8 p.m. in Finney Chapel, and will feature performances by the Oberlin Chamber Orchestra directed by Associate Professor of Conducting Steven Smith, the Oberlin Contemporary Music Ensemble directed by Associate Professor of Wind Conducting Timothy Weiss, and the Oberlin College Choir directed by Assistant Professor of Choral Conducting Hugh Floyd.

Four chamber concerts take place Saturday, February 15. The first begins at 10 a.m. in Fairchild Chapel, followed by concerts at 2, 4, and 8 p.m. in Warner Concert Hall. According to Associate Professor of Composition Lewis Nielson, the Saturday concerts will feature "a rich variety of music for solo and chamber music, and also works involving electronic sound with and without live instruments."

Oberlin students represented on the program are Ashley Fure, Jiena Gu, Angie Knotts, Clara Latham Michael Leibowitz, Clint McCallum, Adam Schoenberg, Nathan Sutter, and Michael Weyandt. All concerts are free and open to the public.
