FEBRUARY 28, 2003--In celebration of International Womens Day, Oberlin Colleges Gender and Womens Studies Program will present a lecture by noted feminist scholar Paola Bacchetta Thursday, March 6. at 4:30 p.m. in the Oberlin Science Center's Craig Lecture Hall. The talk is free and open to the public. The Science Center is located at 130 West Lorain Street. Bacchetta, an associate professor of womens studies at the University of California, Berkeley, and a visiting fellow in the Divinity School at Harvard University, earned a doctorate in sociology at the Sorbonne. Her research focuses on transnational feminist theory, gender and sexuality, religious nationalism, and social movements. Her lecture--titled "Rethinking Transnational Queerdom: 1980s Lesbian and Lesbian Positionalities in New Delhi"--will examine current theoretical and research methods used to study queer social movements around the world. Bacchetta is the author of the forthcoming book Gendered Nationalism: The RSS, the Samiti and their Different Projects for a Hindu Nation and the co-editor of the recent Right-Wing Women: From Conservatives to Extremists around the World (co-edited with Margaret Power). She has published numerous book chapters, as well as articles in French and American journals. |
