OBERLIN COLLEGE TO HOST BLACK STUDIES CONFERENCE APRIL 10-12

MARCH 21, 2003--The 2003 Black Studies Conference--"A Celebration of Scholarship: The Souls of Black Folk"--will be held April 10 through 12 at Oberlin College under the auspices of the Great Lakes Colleges Association (GLCA).

March 28 is the registration deadline for the conference, which is open to GLCA member campuses as well as to other individuals who wish to attend. The event will open at 6 p.m. Thursday, April 10, with a reception and registration and close Saturday, April 12, at 2 p.m.

"A Multiplicity of Engagements: The Twenty-First Century Challenge for Black Studies" is the title of the keynote address to be presented by Dr. Michael Gomez, a professor in the Departments of History and Middle Eastern Studies at New York University and the director of The Association for the Study of the Worldwide African Diaspora (ASWAD).

His published works include Exchanging Our Country Marks: The Transformation of African Identities in the Colonial and Antebellum South (1998) and Pragmatism in the Age of Jihad: The Precolonial State of Bundu (1992).

Conference fees for GLCA faculty/staff is $115; for a GLCA student, $65; non-GLCA faculty/staff, $125; and non-GLCA student, $75. Registration fees include all events, including the lunch and dinner on Friday, and lunch on Saturday, and conference materials. More information can be found at the GLCA web site.

The GLCA aims to preserve and strengthen its member institutions as private colleges of liberal arts and sciences. Member colleges are a group of twelve selective private liberal arts institutions located in Indiana, Michigan, and Ohio: Albion College, Antioch College, Denison University, DePauw University, Earlham College, Hope College, Kalamazoo College, Kenyon College, Oberlin College, Ohio Wesleyan University, Wabash College, and the College of Wooster.
