CHAMPION NAMED HEAD WOMEN'S BASKETBALL COACH--DROPS INTERIM TITLE

MAY 1, 2003---Clayton Koppes, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, has announced that Christa Champion has been appointed head women's basketball coach at Oberlin College. Champion served as interim head coach this past season and led the Yeowomen to a 6-19 overall record.

During the 1994-2000 seasons, Champion was the head women's basketball coach at Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Worcester, Massachusetts. During her six seasons with the Lady Engineers, she led the program to two post-season bids as well as guiding the team to a school record 23 wins and first-ever conference basketball title in 1996. For her coaching efforts, she earned the WBCA District I Coach of the Year award and the New England Women's-8 Conference (NEW-8) Coach of the Year award. During her tenure at WPI, she coached the team to their first NCAA tournament win. She also served as the head women's tennis coach during her tenure at WPI. Previously, Champion was the head women's basketball coach at the University of New Haven in New Haven, Connecticut. In her second season, the Chargers doubled the number of wins from their previous season.

During a recent sabbatical, Champion coached at the interscholastic level, first serving as head coach for the 8th grade boys team at French-American International School in San Francisco, California, in 2000-01, and then working as a volunteer assistant coach for University High School in San Francisco during the 2000-2002 seasons. But the opportunity to jump back into the collegiate scene was too good for Champion to ignore.

Champion was a graduate assistant coach at Smith College during the 1988-1990 seasons. She served as the head junior varsity basketball coach as well as head junior varsity and varsity assistant softball coach for the Lady Pioneers.

Champion is a 1986 graduate of Brown University where she was a four-year starter for the basketball squad leading the team to two Ivy League
championships. She was recognized three times as All-Ivy and was named team captain as a senior. In addition, she was a three-time CoSIDA first-team Academic All-American. Champion graduated Magna cum laude in Biomedical Engineering earning a NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship. In 1995, she was inducted to the Brown University Hall of Fame.
