NPR Radio Lab Hosts Robert Krulwich and Jad Abumrad to Speak at Oberlin March 6

OBERLIN, OHIO — Robert Krulwich '69 and Jad Abumrad '95, the hosts of the innovative WNYC program Radio Lab , will give Oberlin College's fourth Convocation talk of the year   – entitled From Oberlin to Radio Lab : Twenty Five Years Apart” – at 8 p.m. Thursday, March 6, in Oberlin's Finney Chapel, located on the corner of West Lorain and North Professor streets.

The free public series is presented under the auspices of the Finney Lecture Committee and the Office of the President.

The journalists will discuss their individual journeys from Oberlin to public radio, how they met and began working together, and how Oberlin lives at the center of their connection to each other. They will play excerpts from their individual work, their early work together, and excerpts of the newest season of Radio Lab – a show about wonder, discover and big ideas that has become something of a cult sensation.

Krulwich, a correspondent for NPR's Science Desk, reports on the intersections of science and technology with culture, politics, and religion. TV Guide has called him “the most inventive network reporter in television,” and New York magazine described him as “the man who simplifies without being simple.” Krulwich first joined NPR in 1978 and served as economics reporter until 1985 when he joined CBS News. Since 1994, Krulwich has been an ABC News correspondent, appearing regularly on Nightline , World News Tonight, and Good Morning America.

He is also a regular correspondent on the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) investigative series Frontline, where he won an Alfred I. duPont-Columbia University Award for his coverage of campaign finance in the 1992 presidential campaign; a national Emmy Award for his investigation of privacy on the Internet, “High Stakes in Cyberspace”; and a George Polk Award for an hour on the savings and loan scandal. His ABC special on Barbie, a cultural history of the world-famous doll, also won a national Emmy.

Abumrad studied creative writing and music composition at Oberlin. He has written music for films and reported and produced documentaries for a variety of local and national public radio programs, including On the Media, Public Radio International's Studio 360 with Kurt Andersen, Morning Edition, All Things Considered, and WNYC's 24 Hours at the Edge of Ground Zero. He produced and hosted The Ring & I, an insightful, funny, and lyrical look at the enduring power of Wagner's Ring Cycle, a cycle of four epic music dramas by the German composer Richard Wagner. The program aired nationally and internationally, and earned more than 10 awards, including the prestigious 2005 National Headliner Award in Radio.
