Art Museum Receives $590,900 NEH Grant

OBERLIN, OHIO — The Allen Memorial Art Museum (AMAM) has been awarded a grant of $590,900 from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) to expand and improve storage for its important permanent collection of nearly 13,000 works from virtually every culture and from prehistory to the present. The NEH grant will improve access to works of art held in storage, making them more readily available for use by educators, students, and researchers.

The work funded by the NEH grant is part of a redesign and upgrade of the AMAM's 40,800 sq. ft. historic building designed to safeguard the museum’s distinguished holdings. These collections are vital resources for Oberlin College's humanities curriculum, supporting teaching in numerous disciplines, including African American studies, art history, foreign languages, history, and the natural sciences. The AMAM offers numerous school tours as well as concerts, community days, and programming for children, teenagers, and seniors throughout the year with more than 35,000 people visiting the museum annually.

"The NEH grant is a wonderful vote of confidence for the AMAM's mission to support learning from original works of art at Oberlin College, and we are thrilled to be part of a small group of institutions nationwide that received these awards," said Stephanie Wiles, John G.W. Cowles Director of the AMAM.

The NEH is a federal agency supporting research, education, preservation, and public programs in the humanities. “The Endowment offers diverse and competitive grant opportunities in order to promote excellence in the humanities,” said NEH Chairman Bruce Cole. “The recipients… represent scholarship and programming at its very best across a wide variety of disciplines and institutions.”

Founded in 1917, the AMAM (www.oberlin.edu/amam) is one of the finest college or university art museums in the United States.
