Five Creative Writing Seniors Make Public Debut April 2

OBERLIN, OHIO – Emerging authors in Oberlin College's Creative Writing Program will make their public debut Wednesday, April 2nd at the Oberlin Public Library (OPL).

Five graduating seniors will read from their work at 6 p.m. in a town/gown event sponsored by the library, the Oberlin College Creative Writing Program, and the Oberlin Writers' Group (OWG). The free reading will take place in the community room of the OPL, 65 S. Main St.

Oberlin poets Alexander Darr and Cecilia Galarraga, fiction writers Kara Carmosino and Maya Silver, and nonfiction writer and poet, Greta Schroeder will read from their work, discuss their life as writers and take part in a Q&A session at the conclusion of the program.

Oberlin's creative writing program began informally in the early 1960s and became a full-fledged major in 1978. It now numbers among its graduates acclaimed artists such as Pulitzer Prize–winning poet Franz Wright, MacArthur grant–winning poet Thylias Moss, Thisbe Nissen, who won Iowa's John Simmons Short Fiction Award, and Flannery O'Connor Award–winner Wendy Brenner.

Oberlin is part of a growing trend of institutions that offer undergraduate creative writing degrees. The program includes introductory classes, small workshops, one-on-one independent work for advanced students, and formal on-campus readings by graduating seniors.

The Oberlin Writers Group is now in its fifth year. Members meet every Wednesday, except the first, from 6-8 p.m. in the library's Eleanor Owens' room. Beginning writers and all genres are welcome. Call 440 775-4790 for more information.
