By Betty Gabrielli

SEPTEMBER 22, 1999-- Oren Rudavsky '79, who began his career as an award-winning independent filmmaker while at Oberlin, will return to campus this Thursday to screen his latest work under the auspices of Hillel, the Women's Studies Program, and the Alumni Association.

And Baby Makes Two, his latest project, which just premiered at New York's Film Forum, will be shown at 7 P.M. The much-acclaimed A Life Apart: Hasidism in America, will be shown at 8:30 P.M. The free screenings will be held in King 306.

And Baby Makes Two was a joint project by Rudavsky and his wife Judy Katz. The film focuses on a group of Manhattan women who, despite the barriers thrown up by society, are single mothers by choice.

Narrated by Leonard Nimoy and Sarah Jessica Parker, A Life Apart explores how a religious people known for reclusiveness, has adapted enough to survive in America. The work premiered at the New York Jewish Film Festival, enjoyed a six-week run at Lincoln Center, and has aired on PBS.

During his senior year, Rudavsky produced and directed Dreams So Real: Three Men's Stories, which won first place in the 1981 New England Film Festival and several other awards. He subsequently worked as director of photography on the renowned The Amish: Not to Be Modern, which had its premiere at the College. His other documentaries are The Last Klezmer and Twitch and Shout: Living with Tourettes Syndrome.

A-list festivals--including the Berlin, San Francisco, Telluride, Chicago, Atlanta, and Sundance--have chosen his films several times. He has won a number of awards, including the coveted Cine Golden Eagle, and grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities and the National Endowment for the Arts.

Between producing his own documentaries, Rudavsky is a free-lance producer, director, and cinematographer for ABC, CBS, PBS, Discover, A&E, and television abroad, and he has done stints on Seinfeld, Saturday Night Live, and Tales From the Dark Side.
