History of the Friday Night Organ Pump

By Lauren Goodman

MAIN STORY

OCTOBER 29, 1999-- A group of organ majors who wanted to portray the organ as an instrument independent of religious services created the Friday Night Organ Pump in winter 1992.

"So few people knew of the organ apart from church music, and we wanted to change that," says Suter.

"In those days, lots of people would line up outside the 'Sco, the Student Union disco, waiting for it to go free at 12:30 P.M.," he says. Drawing upon the ready-made crowd, Suter and the others advertised midnight organ performances at Finney Chapel, next door to the Student Union.

"We really knew our market," Suter says.

"We held auditions because the highest standard of playing was essential," he says. Even with excellent playing, there was still plenty of opportunity for goofiness.

"My favorite part of the event was controversial posters," says Suter. "They offended just about everyone, but always guaranteed a good turnout, which was our main objective."
