OBERLIN, Ohio--"Beyond the Maine: Imaging the New Empire"--a Smithsonian Institution traveling exhibition of photographs taken near the turn of the century in Cuba, Puerto Rico, and the Philippines--is on view at Oberlin College through February 28. The exhibition helps commemorate the centennial of the end of the Spanish-American War and the U.S. take over of the islands from Spain. Smithsonian curator Laura Larco will give a guided tour of the exhibit at Friday, Feb. 19 at 3 p.m., followed by a talk at 4:30 p.m. by Miguel Bretos. A former Oberlin history faculty member, he is now senior scholar and program advisor at the Smithsonian Center for Latino Initiatives. A reception will be held after the talk. The program is sponsored by Oberlin College's Hispanic House with the support of PRESHCO (Programa de Estudios Hispánicos en Córdoba) and the Office of the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. Mudd Center is open Mondays through Thursdays from 8:30 a.m. to midnight; Fridays from 8:30 a.m. to 10 p.m.; Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.; and Sundays from 10 a.m. to midnight.
