OBERLIN, Ohio--A new conceptual framework for the scientific understanding of life will be outlined by physicist and systems theorist Fritjof Capra in a talk to be presented at 4:30 p.m. next Monday, October 9 at Oberlin College.

Capra--the author of several international bestsellers, including The Tao of Physics- -is a founding director of the Center for Ecoliteracy in Berkeley, which is dedicated to promoting ecology and systems thinking in K-12 education.

In his talk, titled "A New Understanding of Life," Capra will review the intellectual tradition of system thinking, which contains the conceptual and historical roots of the new scientific framework that has emerged over the past 25 years and present a synthesis of recent theories of living systems. The important implications of the new understanding of life for education, ecodesign and biotechnology also will be discussed.

In addition to the Tao of Physics, Capra is the author of The Turning Point and most recently The Web of Life. Capra also co-wrote the screenplay for Mindwalk, a feature film based on his books. Set on the French promontory of Mont St. Michel, the 1990 film stars Sam Waterston, John Heard, and Liv Ullmann.

Oberlin College is an independent undergraduate liberal arts college. Its 2600 students are enrolled in two divisions, the College of Arts and Sciences and the Conservatory of Music. More Oberlin graduates earn Ph.D's than do graduates of any other predominantly undergraduate institution. Oberlin's Allen Art Museum is ranked first among college art museums, and its library is unequaled among college libraries for its depth and range of resources. Located 35 miles southwest of Cleveland, Ohio, Oberlin College admitted women since its beginning in 1833 and is an historical leader in the education of African Americans.
