OBERLIN, OHIO--Charulata. Ankur (The Seedling). Garam Hawa (Hot Winds). Do any of these ring a bell? They should. All are titles of award-winning films from India that are little known in the U.S. Youll have the opportunity to view them as well as five other classic and contemporary South Asian films during Tasveerein ("Images" in Urdu): A Celebration of South Asian Film--on three weekends, starting October 28 and running through November 12. The films-- with English subtitles--will be screened at two locations: Oberlins Apollo Theater, 19 East College Street.; and Room 11 of the Colleges Kettering Hall of Science, 130 West Lorain Street. The screening on November 3 will be at 8 p.m. All other films will be shown at 2 p.m. Admission to all films is free, say the cosponsors, the Oberlin College South Asian Student Association (SASA) and the Oberlin Film Series. The films have as subtexts political and socially conscious themes that address South Asian history, ethnic identity, class, gender, globalization, and environmental issues. South Asia includes Bangladesh, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, India, the Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, and Afghanistan. The two student groups are presenting the celebration "to provide a platform of discussion on the various cultural and political issues depicted in the films," says Sakeena Syed, co-chair of SASA.
