OBERLIN, Ohio--Myla Goldberg 93, the author of the recently published and widely acclaimed novel Bee Season will speak at Oberlin College and read from her work Thursday, September 28 at 4:45 p.m. "Its amazing how quickly a true talent can announce itself," says Newsweek, calling Bee Season a "marvelous debut novel." Goldbergs book tells the story of nine-year-old Eliza Naumann who sweeps a schoolwide spelling bee and ascends to the National Bee. But critics agree Bee Season is much more than a coming-of-age story. Considered a beautifully and movingly written novel about the mysteries of love, family, language and spirituality, it is said to mark the arrival of an extraordinarily talented new writer. Goldbergs stories have appeared in Virgin Fiction, Eclectic Literary Forum and American Writing. She lives in Brooklyn, New York and when not writing, she says, she plays the accordion for the Bindlestiff Family Circus and for a Middle Eastern/Eastern European flavored band called the Galerkin Method. Her talk is the first in a series of three to be presented by the Colleges Creative Writing program this fall. David Young, Oberlins Longman Professor of English and author of the recently published collection of poems At the White Window, will speak October 24, and C.D. Wright, author of 10 books of poems, will speak November 30. |
