Philosopher Norman Care to Deliver Oberlin College Honors Day Address

 


OBERLIN, OHIO ‹ Philosopher Norman Care will deliver the address at Oberlin Collegešs annual Honors Day Assembly. The free, public event takes place at 4:35 p.m. Monday, May 8, in Warner Concert Hall, located in the Oberlin College Conservatory of Music at 77 West College Street.

The title of Care's talk is "Competence, Identity, Conscience, Self-Protection." A professor of philosophy at Oberlin, Care has been a member of the faculty since 1965.

This yearšs event marks Oberlinšs 60th Honors Assembly. The deans of Oberlinšs College of Arts and Sciences and Conservatory of Music will award student prizes, and new members of honor societies (Phi Beta Kappa, Sigma Xi and Pi Kappa Lambda) and fellowship winners will be recognized.

Professor of Organ David Boe will perform, on the Flentrop organ, a prelude by J. S. Bach, his Pičce d'Orgue (BWV 572), and the postlude, also by Bach, The Art of Fugue (BWV 1080) Contrapunctus XI. Boe, who joined Oberlin's faculty in 1962, was dean of the Conservatory from 1975 until 1990, and served as acting dean from January to June of 1999.

Norman Care's research and writing interests are in moral theory, political philosophy, moral psychology, environmental ethics, medical ethics, and the philosophy of art. He is the author of On Sharing Fate (1987) and Living with One's Past: Personal Fates and Moral Pain (1996). Rowman & Littlefield will publish his newest book, Decent People, this year.

He has also co-edited, with Charles Landesman, Readings in the Theory of Action (1968); with Professor of Philosophy Robert H. Grimm, Perception and Personal Identity (1969); and, with Thomas K. Trelogan, Issues in Law and Morality (1973). Care has also written articles, essays, and reviews in a wide variety of professional journals and magazines of social commentary.

Care and his wife Barbara live in Oberlin. They have two children and five grandchildren.
