OBERLIN, OHIO -- Oberlin President Nancy S. Dye has announced the appointment of Kay Thomson as vice president of development and alumni affairs at Oberlin College.

Thomson has been serving as acting vice president since September 1997. She was appointed director of major gifts in the Office of Development shortly after joining the Oberlin staff in October 1995.

"Kay brings to her position experience as a fund raiser, particularly in the area of foundation and corporate support for education," says Dye, who announced Thomson's appointment at the June meeting of the College's Board of Trustees.

"I have worked closely with Kay over the past three years and know her to be an excellent development officer. I am confident that she will do a superb job, and I am delighted she has accepted this challenge as we enter the largest fundraising campaign in the history of Oberlin."

"Thomson has first hand experience in all facets of development, including special projects, building campaigns, and developing grant applications for foundation and corporate support. She is an experienced administrator in the field of higher education and has worked successfully with large center and project grants."

At the University of Alabama at Birmingham, Thomson oversaw three successful major grant applications to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), as well as smaller project grants from the NIH, the American Heart Association, the National Science Foundation and the Southern Research Institute.

Thomson also was at Vanderbilt University, where she was involved in projects funded by the Ford Foundation, the Japan Foundation, the NIH and the National Endowment for the Arts.

In addition to her work in the academic sphere, Thomson's extensive volunteer activities have involved her in fund-raising administration in hospitals and professional music organizations. She holds the M.Ed. degree in organization and management from the New England Graduate School of Antioch University. A professional singer, she completed her undergraduate education in voice at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, England, and holds additional certification in performance and teaching from the Royal Academy of Music, London.

She is married to Haskell Thomson, director of the Keyboard Division and chair of the Organ Department at the Oberlin College Conservatory of Music. She has two grown children, Grant and Nicole.
