RELEASE ON RECEIPT

MEMBERS OF THE CLEVELAND ORCHESTRA TO PRESENT CHAMBER RECITAL AT OBERLIN CONSERVATORY OCTOBER 24, 2000
Concert in Memory of Kenneth Hall Woodside ’59

OBERLIN, OHIO--Seven members of the Cleveland Orchestra will present a chamber music recital Tuesday, October 24, 2000, at 8:00 P.M. in Kulas Recital Hall at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music, 77 W. College Street, in Oberlin. The free concert--held in memory of Kenneth Hall Woodside (1938-1999), an Oberlin alumnus--will include chamber works by Saint-Saëns, Ibert, Ravel and Brahms.

Although Woodside graduated in 1959 with a bachelor of arts degree in chemistry, he was seriously involved in music studies while at Oberlin. Besides a career in research and teaching biochemistry, Woodside was an active musician; he was a member of the American Recorder Society, a founding member of an amateur orchestra in Hershey, Pennsylvania, and he enjoyed performing chamber music with his wife Laura Adams ’60, a violinist. Both of their daughters are professional violinists; Beth Woodside has been a member of The Cleveland Orchestra since 1994, and is performing in the memorial concert for her father, who died in 1999.

The other Cleveland Orchestra members performing are Bryan Dumm (cello); Mary Kay Fink ’83, (flute); Daniel Gilbert (clarinet), associate professor of clarinet at the Oberlin Conservatory; Mark Jackobs (viola); Takako Masame (violin); and Trina Struble ’91 (harp).

The program includes Fantasie in A major, Op. 124 by Camille Saint-Saëns; Deux Interludes for flute, violin and harp by Jacques Ibert; Intoduction and Allegro by Maurice Ravel, and Quintet in B minor, Op. 115 by Johannes Brahms.

The concert is intended to raise awareness of the recently-established Kenneth H. Woodside Endowed Memorial Scholarship, which will aid third- and fourth-year Conservatory students at Oberlin College in completing their education.

Oberlin College is an independent undergraduate liberal arts college. Its 2600 students are enrolled in two divisions, the College of Arts and Sciences and the Conservatory of Music. More Oberlin graduates earn Ph.D's than do graduates of any other predominantly undergraduate institution. Oberlin's Allen Art Museum is ranked first among college art museums, and its library is unequaled among college libraries for its depth and range of resources. Located 35 miles southwest of Cleveland, Ohio, Oberlin College admitted women since its beginning in 1833 and is an historical leader in the education of African Americans.
