OBERLIN, Ohio--La Alianza Latina, Oberlin College's Latino student organization, will host a one-day symposium entitled "Empowerment Through The Latino Student Organization" Saturday, April 24 on the Oberlin College campus.
The symposium will serve the dual purpose of speaking to vital issues within the Latina/o student communities as well as creating a forum for dialogue on the effects of HIV/AlDS in the Latino and other communities. Symposium activities are designed to bring multiple communities together in an effort to create increased intercultural dialogue.
Suzanne Oboler, Associate Professor of American Civilization & Ethnic Studies at Brown University, will discuss the multilayered nature of Latina/o identity encompassing ethnicity, gender, nationality, and more.
Rane Arroyo, a leading Gay and Puerto Rican poet and playwright as well as Professor of Creative Writing and American Studies at The University of Toledo, will speak on the intersections of culture and sexuality.
A benefit concert featuring rap artist Doug E. Fresh, co-organized by the student organizations 12 Inches of Velvet and La Alianza Latina, is scheduled for Saturday, April 24 at 10 P.M. in Oberlin College's Dionysus Club
Several panels and speakers from the AIDS Task Force of Greater Cleveland and other organizations will participate and address such subtopics as "Living with HIV/AIDS," "AIDS & The College Community," "Advocacy Through Hip Hop," and "HIV/AIDS & Latinas."
