OBERLIN, OHIO -- Members of the Office and Professional Employees Union (OCOPE) have "overwhelmingly ratified" a new, three-year contract between the union and Oberlin College, President Julie E. Weir has announced.

The agreement will remain in force until June 30, 2001.

According to the agreement, effective July 1, the 189 OCOPE members will receive increases of 3.5% the first year; 3% the second and third year; an increase in retirement contribution in the first and third year of the contract, and an increase in tuition remission, plus increased job security.

The previous OCOPE/College contract also was "overwhelmingly ratified" in 1995. The recent negotiations ended early on July 2, and the membership ratified the proposed contract on July 10.

Negotiating the agreement for OCOPE were executive board members Julie Weir, president; Shelby Warrens, first vice president; Diane Lee, second vice president; Cynthia Miller, treasurer; Sandra Kanuch, personnel coordinator; Janene Brunson, secretary; and Stephen Hunt, professional representative for Local 502.

Representing the college were Ruth Spencer, director of human resources; Mary Tvaroha, manager of employee relations and recruitment; and legal representative Michael Frantz.

One of the first clerical and technical unions in the US to be established at a private educational institution, OCOPE was founded in 1970 with 170 members and became affiliated with the Office and Professional Employees International Union (OPEIU) in 1978 as local 502.
