RENOWNED COMPOSERS TO TALK ABOUT THE JOURNEY "FROM PAGE TO STAGE: PRODUCING NEW MUSICAL WORKS FOR THE STAGE"
Free Public Forum Takes Place Nov. 12

OBERLIN, OHIO--Fans of opera and musical theater are in for a rare treat.

The creative talent responsible for such disparate works as Fiddler on the Roof, Angels in America, The Crucible, Coyote Tales and The Seduction of a Lady will gather on the same Oberlin stage for a conversation about what it takes to mount a production.

"From Page to Stage: Producing New Musical Works for the Stage," is a free, public forum hosted by the Oberlin Conservatory of Music at Oberlin College, and takes place Sunday, November 12, at 7:30 p.m. in Hall Auditorium, located at 67 N. Main Street in Oberlin. The forum, intended as a prelude to the Oberlin Opera Theater’s production of Henry Mollicone’s Coyote Tales--which premieres later in the week--features these renowned composers and librettists:

  • librettist Sheldon Harnick (Fiddler on the Roof, Fiorello, She Loves Me);
  • composer Anthony Davis, (Angels in America: Millennium Approaches, Perestroika, Amistad, Under the Double Moon and X, the Life and Times of Malcolm X);
  • composer Robert Ward (The Crucible);
  • composer Richard Wargo (the opera trilogy The Music Shop, The Seduction of a Lady and A Visit to the Country); and
  • composer Henry Mollicone (Coyote Tales).

David Bamberger, general director of Cleveland Opera, will moderate the discussion.

Mollicone will also guest conduct the Oberlin Orchestra for Oberlin’s production of Coyote Tales, a two-act opera--with a libretto by Harnick--based upon the legends and myths of Native American tribes.

Oberlin College is an independent undergraduate liberal arts college. Its 2600 students are enrolled in two divisions, the College of Arts and Sciences and the Conservatory of Music. More Oberlin graduates earn Ph.D's than do graduates of any other predominantly undergraduate institution. Oberlin's Allen Art Museum is ranked first among college art museums, and its library is unequaled among college libraries for its depth and range of resources. Located 35 miles southwest of Cleveland, Ohio, Oberlin College admitted women since its beginning in 1833 and is an historical leader in the education of African Americans.
