Among the same group, Oberlin remains the third most-popular alma mater for Peace Corps volunteers throughout the organization's 37-year history. Dartmouth College and the University of Chicago top the overall list for small colleges and universities.

Volunteerism is the norm at Oberlin. More than 1,000 of the college's roughly 2,900 students participate in community service projects each year.

Nearly 6,700 Peace Corps volunteers are serving in 80 countries, working to help fight hunger, bring clean water to communities, teach children, help start new small businesses, and stop the spread of AIDS. Since 1961, more than 150,000 Americans have joined the Peace Corps. Nearly all of them have been college graduates.

American University topped the 1998 list with 36 graduates in the corps. University of Chicago is second with 23; followed by Carleton College (21); and Tufts University and Colorado College (both 20).
