OBERLIN, OHIO--Oberlin College is pleased to announce the awarding of the Ambassador Edwin O. Reischauer Scholarship to Takahiko Yoshioka, a graduate of St. Marys School, Tokyo, Japan. He is the second recipient of this full-tuition, four year scholarship. It is awarded annually to a Japanese student of exceptional promise and ability. The scholarship is named in honor of former American ambassador to Japan Edwin O. Reischauer, who died in 1990. Reischauer was a 1931 graduate of Oberlin College. Takahiko Yoshioka, the son of Takkaaki and Yayoi Yoshioka, will begin his studies at Oberlin later this month. Takahiko has lived in a number of foreign countries and would like to use his Oberlin education in a way that would increase international awareness. In this goal he speaks of Ambassador Reischauer as a "role model." The Ambassador Edwin O. Reischauer Scholarship is designed to strengthen Japanese-American understanding and cooperation and to create, over time, an association of scholars educated in the liberal arts and committed to international understanding. Any Japanese national who has been accepted for admission to Oberlin's College of Arts and Sciences is eligible for this award. The Reischauer scholar will be selected by the Oberlin College Office of Admissions in consultation with the appropriate committees. Criteria for selection is a strong academic record and the potential for profiting from an American liberal arts education. For more information about the Ambassador Edwin O. Reischauer Scholarship, please contact the Oberlin College Office of Admissions by mail at 101 North Professor Street, Oberlin, Ohio 44074-1075 U.S.A.; by telephone: 440-775-8411; or by e-mail: college.admissions@oberlin.edu.
