OBERLIN, OHIO--Students at Oberlin College direct, choreograph, and perform in a diverse variety of theater and dance pieces each academic year. This season, students will present four theater productions, two dance concerts, and a series of free studio concerts, all sponsored by the Theater and Dance Program. All events are open to the public. Seating in Little Theater is limited.

Throughout the fall, an informal series of Studio Concerts will be presented in Warner Center. Student dancers and choreographers showcase their own work; faculty-taught dance classes also perform. These eclectic and energetic concerts are a great way to start off your weekend&emdash;and they're free! Studio Concerts run from 4:45 to 6:00 pm on the following Friday afternoons this fall: September 25, October 30, November 20, and December 11. (Spring dates to be announced.)

The first theater event of the student season runs November 5, 6, 7 and 8 in Little Theater. Set in New York City, Weldon Rising by Phyllis Nagy is a powerful drama which constructs a portrait of one violent crime&emdash;the murder of Natty Weldon's lover, Jimmy&emdash;and those affected by it. Directed by senior Theater major Sarah Rooney, this is a provocative exploration of evil which will make us question our own responsibility in today's society. (Because of mature themes and language, please be advised that Weldon Rising is not suitable for young children.) Performances are at 8 pm, Thursday, Friday and Saturday, Nov. 5, 6 and 7, with 2 pm matinees on Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 7 and 8.

Also performed November 5, 6, and 7 is the annual Fall Forward Dance Concert in Warner Center. Student choreographers, dancers, designers, composers, and musicians collaborate for an evening that always reflects a wide range of movement styles, mood, and content. Performances are at 8 pm, Thursday, Friday and Saturday, Nov. 5, 6 and 7.

Winding up the fall student season December 9, 10 , 11, 12 and 13 in Little Theater will be The Fantasticks by Tom Jones and Harvey Schmidt. The longest-running musical in American theater history tells the story of a couple who journey together from idealistic young love to the bittersweet truths of the "real world." Senior Theater minor Jeremy Ellison-Gladstone directs this entertaining audience favorite. Performances are at 8 pm, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday, Dec. 9, 10, 11 and 12, with 2 pm matinees on Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 12 and 13.

The spring season opens March 5, 6 and 7 with a one-woman show in Little Theater. Theater major Sasha Pollack will create and perform a piece based on the women in William Shakespeare's plays as part of her Senior Honors Project. A kaleidoscopic look at these fascinating females from ingenue to matriarch, the evening may explore issues of age and sexuality for Shakespeare's women, as well as how the characters are relevant to a modern audience. Performances are at 8 pm, Friday and Saturday, March 5 and 6, with 2 pm matinees on Saturday and Sunday, March 6 and 7.

On April 8, 9 and 10 the Spring Back Dance Concert will be performed in Warner Center. From humorous to dramatic, tap to contact improvisation, and contemplative solo to exuberant group pieces, this annual event is always a compelling and accomplished showcase for student works. Performances are at 8 pm, Thursday, Friday and Saturday, April 8, 9 and 10.

Also April 8, 9 and 10, Billy Bishop Goes to War, a play with music by John Gray and Eric Peterson. Billy Bishop was the soldier who had the most "kills" of any fighter pilot in World War I, but over the course of this modern-day history play, he turns out to be much more&emdash;and less&emdash;than just a war hero. Theater major Benjamin Grubb directs and performs the title role in this two-man play as part of his Senior Honors Project. Performances are at 8 pm, Thursday, Friday and Saturday, April 8, 9 and 10, with a 2 pm matinee on Saturday, April 10.

These events do sell out on occasion, so avoid disappointment and get your tickets now! For your convenience, the Central Ticket Service (CTS) has a 24-hour ticket reservation line, (440) 775-8169. CTS is located in the lobby of Hall Auditorium (between the Oberlin Inn and Allen Art Museum) and is open from noon to 5 pm, Monday through Friday.
