OBERLIN, OHIO -- Discount subscription ticket packages are available for Oberlin College's 1998-99 Theater, Dance and Opera season. The six-event season includes three theater performances, Kindertransport, The Cherry Orchard, and The Darker Face of the Earth; two operas, Roméo et Juliette and Cosi Fan Tutte; and one dance concert featuring the Oberlin Dance Company.

The two-event fall season begins October 9, 10 and 11 with Diane Samuels's Kindertransport, directed by Jane S. Armitage, associate professor of theater. Faith, the youngest of three generations of women, discovers a box full of old photos and papers in the attic that threaten to destroy her understanding of her family's history. Shifting back and forth in time from 1939 Nazi Germany to suburban England in the 1970s, the play explores questions of identity and the effect of the past on those who think they have left it behind. Performances are at 8 pm, Friday and Saturday, Oct. 9 and 10, with a 2 pm matinee on Sunday, Oct. 11.

The fall opera is Charles Gounod's Roméo et Juliette, to be performed November 18, 20, 21 and 22. The opera will be sung in French. Music direction is by Jonathon Field, opera theater director and assistant professor of opera theater. A guest conductor will be announced. Gounod's soaring music creates a dramatic setting for Shakespeare's tragic story of young star-crossed lovers from Verona. Performances are at 8 pm, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, Nov. 18, 20 and 21, with a 2 pm matinee on Sunday, Nov. 22.

The four-event spring season begins February 5, 6 and 7 with Anton Chekhov's The Cherry Orchard, directed by Paul Moser, associate professor of theater. Madame Ranevskaya returns with family and retinue to her ancestral estate, only to face the prospect of having to sell it because of the family's money problems. Chekhov's last play offers a poignant yet humorous picture of the Russian landowning class in decline. Performances are at 8 pm, Friday and Saturday, Feb. 5 and 6, with a 2 pm matinee on Sunday, Feb. 7.

The spring opera is Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's Cosi Fan Tutte, to be performed March 10, 12, 13 and 14. Directed by Jonathon Field, the opera will be sung in Italian. The conductor is Paul Polivnick, music director of the Oberlin Orchestra and Oberlin Chamber Orchestra. This delightful 1790 comic opera set in Naples tells of two soldiers who disguise themselves in order to test the faithfulness of their fianceés. Performances are at 8 pm, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, March 10, 12 and 13, with a 2 pm matinee on Sunday, March 14.

On April 16, 17 and 18, The Darker Face of the Earth by Rita Dove will be presented, directed by associate professor of theater and African American Studies Caroline Jackson Smith. Set in antebellum South Carolina, this exciting new play by our former national Poet Laureate examines the complex relationships engendered by slavery. The powerful mythic drama unfolds against a background of ritual, movement, and music. Performances are at 8 pm, Friday and Saturday, April 16 and 17, with a 2 pm matinee on Sunday, April 18.

The season concludes May 7 and 8 with the Oberlin Dance Company concert which features an eclectic blend of original dance pieces. Choreographer Nusha Martynuk, associate professor of dance, creates a new ensemble dance for the students of the 1999 Oberlin Dance Company. Guest artists and invited student pieces round out the diverse evening's program. Performances are at 8 pm, Friday and Saturday, May 7 and 8.
