AUTO IGNITION SYSTEM

APPARATUS
frame with variable speed motor, distributor, ignition coil, and spark plug
202-20-F1
car battery 101-cart
switch 101-09-D4
camera 202-09-D

DESCRIPTION
Use the motor to drive the distributor, close the switch to the battery, and show the sparking of the spark plug.  This demonstrates one application of transformers - the ignition coil is used to provide sufficient voltage for breakdown of the air in the spark gap.

The distributor cap can be removed and the coil connected directly to the spark plug.  The leaves the cam, points, and capacitor visible.
Don't leave the switch to the battery closed for too long, to prevent things from heating up.

Use the video camera to show the spark plug.

NOTES

The rotor electrode is worn down and a bit short, so performance is better with the secondary coil connected directly to the spark plug.

Connect the battery to the banana jacks on the panel, via the switch.
