The power supply is connected to
platinum electrodes. The apparatus contains a dilute acid.
Turn up the voltage until bubbles can be seen at
the electrodes. Hydrogen gas forms at the negative electrode and
oxygen gas at the positive. Note the 2:1 ratio of gas
volumes. The hydrogen can be vented into an inverted test tube,
and ignited with a lit splint.
NOTES
Use about 1 g of sodium sulfate
dissolved in 150 ml of distilled water.
