Pressing the button
on the igniter cocks and then releases a spring-loaded striker.
When struck, the
piezoelectric crystal produces a voltage that can be detected with a
spark gap, a neon bulb, or an electroscope.
If the amplified output of a function generator is
connected across the crystal, it can be heard faintly. It is
loudest around 9 kHz.
