DESCRIPTION
- Orient the spinning gyroscope with
its axis of
rotation vertical and the extra mass on top, and it will balance on
the two points for several seconds, righting itself when it starts to
tip.
Initially the angular momentum vector is vertical. The gyroscope
is
free to rotate about a horizontal axis perpendicular to the base.
As the gyro tips, L precesses to become aligned with the torque.
Then the weight on top produces an additional torque parallel to the
original precession vector. L tries to align with this new
torque vector. The new precession opposes the original tipping
motion and rights the gyroscope.
Keep the
gyro over the rubber mat, and catch it before it falls.
This is similar to a model gyroscope monorail car.
