OPTICAL CRYSTALS

APPARATUS
laser 202-21-B6
set of Bergsten diffraction plates
202-21-E
ground glass screen
202-21-C4
video camera
202-09-C4

DESCRIPTION
The slides have various arrays of elements of different shapes, sizes, spacings, patterns, angles, and layers.  Shine a laser through the arrays to view the diffraction patterns, as an optical analog of x-ray crystal diffraction.   Use the ground glass screen and video camera to make the patterns visible to a large group, or use the laser beam profiler setup.

NOTES
There are seven slides with four patterns each:

1    a)  random array of dots
      b), c), d)  one row of dots, spacing = 0.12, 0.08, 0.06 mm.
2    rows of dots with 0.12 x 0.08 mm spacing
       a)  two rows
       b)  three rows
       d)  four rows
       d)  rectangular array
3   rows of dots with 0.08 mm spacing
       a)  one row
       b)  two rows at 60°
       c)  three rows at 60°
       d)  three rows at 60°
4    two layers of dots, layer spacing about 0.88 mm
       a)  random array
       b)  hexagonal arrays 0.1 mm
       c)  rectangular arrays 0.12 x 0.18 mm
       d)  rectangular arrays 0.08 x 0.12 mm
5   random arrays of non-dots
       a)  *'s, size = 0.1 mm
       b)  *'s, size = 0.05 mm
       c)  S's, size = 0.1 mm
       d)  S's, size = 0.05 mm
6  arrays of A's
       a)  random array
       b)  one row, 0.07 mm spacing
       c)  rectangular lattice, 0.07 x 0.14 mm
       d)  hexagonal lattice, 0.14 mm spacing
7 closely-spaced arrays of :.
       a)  rectangular lattice, 0.024 x 0.04 mm spacing
       b)  face-centered rectangular lattice, 0.024 x 0.04 mm spacing
       c)  side-centered rectangular lattice, 0.024 x 0.04 mm
       d)  random array, size of :. is 0.012 x 0.02 mm
