KNIPP'S SINGING
TUBES

-
APPARATUS
Knipp's singing tubes

DESCRIPTION
Each tube is closed
at one end and contains a smaller tube which is closed at the other
end. When heated at
the closed end, the tube assembly resonates with a pressure
antinode at the closed end of the smaller tube and a node at
the open end of the larger tube. It behaves like a closed pipe
whose effective
length is the sum of the lengths of the larger and smaller tubes.
Each tube has a movable glass sleeve at the open end so that its length
and pitch can be
varied, and beats produced.
- NOTES
- Tubes should be horizontal so that
only the tip is heated.
Do not allow the glass to become red hot.
