KNIPP'S SINGING TUBES

APPARATUS
Knipp's singing tubes
202-07-D4
butane burner and striker
202-11-B

DESCRIPTION

Each tube is closed at one end and contains a smaller tube which is closed at the other end.  When heated at the closed end, the tube assembly resonates with a pressure antinode at the closed end of the smaller tube and a node at the open end of the larger tube.  It behaves like a closed pipe whose effective length is the sum of the lengths of the larger and smaller tubes.

Each tube has a movable glass sleeve at the open end so that its length and pitch can be varied, and beats produced.

NOTES

Tubes should be horizontal so that only the tip is heated.

Do not allow the glass to become red hot.
