Tap the horizontal rods on the ends
with the wooden hammer to produce longitudinal waves. The chimes
range in pitch from about 5 to 20 kHz and can be used to determine the
upper limit of one's range of
hearing.
A mic and scope can be used to show that the shorter tubes produce
sound.
The chimes can also be used to demonstrate the dependence of pitch on
length.
