ANNE KEALA KELLY, our keynote addressee, is a Native Hawaiian activist, filmmaker
and journalist, who has published over 80 articles, essays and radio reports
regarding current Hawaiian issues. She is being brought to Oberlin in conjunction
with the Indigenous Women's Series.
Ms. Kelly's talk will address Hawaiian sovereignty politics today, related
issues of indigeneity, and how Transnationalism and Globalization are new
words for an old practice of dispossessing people of their resources and thereby
maintaining the state's push for hegemony. She will consider the impact of
colonial and settler influences on contemporary Hawaiian sovereignty struggle
and issues related to disavowing indigeneity and the conflation of non-Native
identities with the Native.
