Hip Hop 101 is a student organization devoted to maintaining
a diverse representation of Hip Hop on the Oberlin College campus
and surrounding communities.Every other year we host a Hip Hop conference
in the spring featuring speakers and artists in hopes of starting
an ongoing dialogue of issues surrounding the Hip Hop community.
This March, we are focusing on Hip Hop's role in addressing issues
of race and class surrounding Hurricane Katrina. Many of us felt
that Hip Hop was nowhere to be found when questions were being asked
of our leaders. We feel that Hip Hop has the opportunity to be a
healing and transformative power for the communities that have been
abandoned by us. The 2007 Hip Hop conference represents a call to
action through a discourse on Hurricane Katrina and hope.
