Senate protects forest lands
To the Editors:

On behalf of OhioPIRG, I would like to thank the Oberlin College Student Senate for signing on to a letter calling for the preservation of our national forest lands.

In 2001, President Clinton signed an executive order to permanently protect 58.5 million acres of pristine forest lands. He signed the Roadless Rule into law because a coalition of 500 groups collected 1.6 million public comments from Americans everywhere.

Clearly, the rule had a public mandate. This should not be much of a surprise, as these lands not only provide habitat for wildlife and are integral parts of important ecosystems, but they are also beautiful recreation areas.

These days, unfortunately, the Bush Administration is considering ignoring this public mandate through proposals to roll back this important rule.

As part of our national campaign, OhioPIRG is collecting endorsements from professors, student groups, college administration members and student leaders, calling upon the Forest Service to preserve the Roadless Rule.

We thank the Senate for taking a stand to protect our forests.
