Allegheny captures football title

With a 20-12 victory over Ohio Wesleyan last weekend, the Allegheny College football team completed this season’s NCACslate with an unblemished record.

The Gators, (7-0 NCAC, 7-3 overall) claimed the NCAC championship and their eighth bid to the NCAA Division III playoffs.

They will take on Montclair State (8-1) tomorrow in the first round for the right to advance and play either Brockport State (9-1) or Ithaca (8-2).

Wittenberg falls in field hockey tourney

The Wittenberg University field hockey team was shut out 6-0 by Cortland State in the second round of the NCAA Division III tournament last week.

The Tigers (13-7), who had a bye in the first round, earned a tournament berth by winning the NCACregular season and tournament titles.

Cortland State went on to defeat Williams 6-4 and advanced to the national semifinals.

Dominican defeats Denison

Denison University, the NCAC regular season co-champion, lost 2-1 to Ohio Dominican in the second round of the NCAA Division III men’s soccer tournament.

In the third round, Dominican will face John Carroll, who topped the other national tournament NCAC representative, Ohio Wesleyan, in the first round.

The 1-0 loss marked the first time in 13 years that Ohio Wesleyan didn’t reach the NCAA regional final.

Allegheny, Denison knocked out

Both NCAC teams selected to the NCAADivision III women’s soccer tournament fell in the second round last week after receiving first- round byes.

Denison, the recipient of the conference’s automatic bid after capturing the NCAC title, lost 4-2 to the College of New Jersey. The Big Red ended up 12-6-1.

Wilmington College topped Allegheny 1-0 to end the Gators’ season. Allegheny, the regular season NCACchampion, finished with a 15-2-2 record.

Gator women qualify for national meet

Having finished second in last weekend’s Mideast Regional, the Allegheny women’s cross country will race as a team at the NCAADivision III national cross country championships for the first time since 1992.

Several runners from other NCACschools qualified for the national meet as individuals as well.

Although they came up short, Oberlin’s men’s and women’s teams competed in the Great Lakes regional last weekend.

The women finished 17th out of 34 teams. The men placed 19th out of 32.

Senior Julia Goeke finished 27th to capture all-region honors for the Yeowomen.
