Drunk Obies insult professor at party

A visiting professor described as being of Asian descent was allegedly told to return to his “fucking country” by two Oberlin students at an off-campus party last Saturday. The two students are members of the College football team and were reportedly under the influence of alcohol at the time.

“It was just two football players making trouble for absolutely no reason,” College junior K.S. said. He attended the party where the incident took place, and learned of its details from an acquaintance who saw what happened, she said.

“It sounded like they were drunk and walking by and randomly cursing out a group of people standing outside at the party, who I don’t even think that they knew,” she said.

The party, held on 118 Lorain Street, was poorly attended because of snow. “There were like 15 to 20 people there, total,” she said.

Another partygoer standing outside recounted the incident to a friend, who agreed to speak to the Review.

“Allegedly what happened was that [the two students] weren’t happy with the party and were complaining about how lame it was from the outside,” the student, who wished to remain anonymous, said.

A few others were standing outside the party, including Derrick Watson, the coach of Oberlin’s men’s lacrosse team, and a professor of Asian descent. They told the two students to “at least go in” to the party before complaining about it, according to the source.

“In return, [the two students] started making threats and intimidating them, saying how much bigger they were, etc.,” the student added. “That was when they told the professor to ‘go back to his fucking country.’”

“Then the football players found out that one of the guys they were cursing at was the coach of the men’s lacrosse team, after he told them and threatened to get them kicked off the football team or something,” K.S. said.

When approached by the Review, the two students allegedly involved in the incident refused to comment.

The professor who was reportedly the target of their remarks also declined to make a statement.

“If there was an issue it has been resolved, and I don’t have anything to say,” he said.

“What I got from [my friend’s] account of the story was the stupidity of those two football players,” K.S. said. “[They] thought it would be fun to randomly curse people out and then realized how idiotic they were acting when someone called them out on it. “

Football coach Jeff Ramsey was informed of the incident earlier this week and has reportedly been in dialogue with the two students involved. He declined to comment.
