Yeowomen drop three close games

The Oberlin College women’s basketball team looked to rebound after a close loss to conference foe Ohio Wesleyan University, traveling to Richmond, Ind. to take on the Quakers of Earlham College.

Oberlin and Earlham battled back and forth the entire contest and the lead switched hands several times. Trailing by only three heading into halftime, Oberlin still had a decent chance at winning the road conference game.

However, cold shooting by the Yeowomen and clutch free throws by Earlham sealed the 79-69 Quaker victory.

Junior guard Cristinia Briboneria led Oberlin with 17 points and four steals.

With their second straight close loss, the Yeowomen slipped to 1-3 overall and 0-2 in NCAC play. On the bright side, Oberlin played competitively against two of the top five teams in the conference away from their home court.

After the tough loss to Earlham, Oberlin traveled for their next game against non-conference foe Ursuline College last Wednesday.

Despite shooting 28.6 percent to Ursuline’s 44 percent from the floor in the first half, Oberlin only trailed 26-25 at halftime.

The lead continued to change frequently in the second half as the game stayed close until the end. Briboneira hit a shot with 11 second left to put the Yeowomen on top 60-59.

Ursuline sophomore guard Lisa Piechowski countered, however, with a basket of her own in the game’s closing seconds, giving Ursuline the win in a 61-60 nailbiter.

Piechowski led all scorers for the game with 23 points.

Briboneria continued her strong offensive performance this season by chipping in 19 points to pace the Yeowomen.

Junior guard Nicole Burford and first-year guard Quintetta Stubblefield each added ten points for Oberlin.

After the tough defeat, Oberlin’s record slipped to 1-4 with three consecutive losses.

Up next for the Yeowomen is familiar opponent Notre Dame College of Ohio tonight at 7:30 p.m. at home. Oberlin’s only victory of the season came against the Falcons in the Cleveland Tip-off Classic.
