Worker petitions against CDS
Bon Appetit service charged with harassment

A Campus Dining Services employee is petitioning the College for reinstatement after being fired in October from his job as a food service maintenance worker.

Ed Beard, who worked at Oberlin for six years according to his letter, claims he began having problems with management when Bon Appetit replaced Sodexho Marriott as the College’s dining service provider two years ago. Beard claims to have filed numerous harassment complaints before his dismissal, ranging from being followed around on the job to being intimidated aggressively and called names by management.

Beard claims that he is not alone. The National Labor Relations Board has charged Bon Appetit’s management with harassment and intimidation tactics in the past.

Likewise, management has filed numerous complaints about Beard. Nevertheless, Human Resources has dismissed about 20 of management’s complaints due to lack of proof, the letter said.

According to Beard, he was terminated for failing to perform a task assigned to another employee, wearing a walkman around his neck while in Stevenson and for an anonymous complaint that Beard claims was about a private conversation he had with three other men about hunting equipment.

Beard said that he has been denied severance pay and will not be celebrating Christmas this year.

After the UAW and co-workers’ testimonials failed to get him reinstated, he appealed to the students, petitioning outside Stevenson and distributing a letter around the dining hall. He is also urging students to call President Dye and Human Resources Director Ruth Spencer and ask them to reinstate him.
