Yeowomen top Notre Dame 74-68

The Oberlin College women’s basketball team opened their season with a win and a loss at the Greater Cleveland Tip-Off Tournament Nov. 21-22.

A loss to Ohio Wesleyan last Wednesday brought the Yeowomen’s record to 1-2.

Oberlin’s first game of the season ended in lopsided fashion as Case Western Reserve University jumped out to a 38-18 halftime lead. The Spartans extended the margin in the second half, eventually downing the Yeowomen 71-38.

Junior guard Nicole Burford paced Oberlin with 10 points.

With the loss, the Yeowomen advanced to face Notre Dame College in the consolation game of the Greater Cleveland Tip-Off Tournament the next day.

This time, Oberlin got off to a much better start, shooting 59.4 percent from the field in the first half for a 46-38 halftime lead. The Yeowomen also turned it up on the other end of the court, forcing Notre Dame into 34.6 percemt shooting for the game.

Burford and senior center Tranice Harrell led the offensive display effort, each shooting 80 percent for 18 and 20 points respectively.

This combination of offense and defense allowed Oberlin to overcome 27 turnovers for a 74-68 win.

The Yeowomen took back to the court after a Thanksgiving respite last Wednesday in their conference opener against Ohio Wesleyan.

Although four Yeowomen scored in double figures, paced by Burford with 18 points and and junior guard Cristina Briboneria with 17, Ohio Wesleyan came out on top in a nailbiter.

Harrell scored 15 and senior Amber Coleman added 10 points.

Rebounding may have been the difference as the Battling Bishops managed a 44-31 advantage on the boards.

Tomorrow, the Yeowomen travel to face Earlham College in another conference contest.
