Indoor track places third, fifth at Case
Women led by NCAC athletes of the week

The Oberlin men’s and women’s indoor track and field teams competed at the Case Western Reserve University Invitational in Cleveland and at the NCAC relays at Wabash College over Winter Term. Both meets featured a tough field and each team yielded good results.

At the Case Western Invite, the women’s team finished strong in third and the men took fifth place. Senior Shannon Houlihan and junior Teresa Collins led the Yeowomen with individual first place wins. Houlihan won the 55-meter hurdles in 9.12 and jumped to second in both the long and triple jump, with distances of 15’4” and 34’11’’ respectively.

Collins jumped 35’3” in the triple jump for first place and ran the 400-meter dash in 1:00.50 for another first place win.

Returning junior Leslie Bosworth nearly caused a four-way tie in the high jump by scoring a 5’1” that put her in fourth, while junior Magdalen Dale tied for fourth in the long jump with 14’11”. Bosworth also placed third in the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 9.39. Her teammate, sophomore Carmen Welton, finished third in the 800-meter dash with a time of 2:28.41.

On the men’s team, junior Bret Petersen set the pace for the Yeomen, taking third place with a time of 52.33 in the 400-meter race.

“My goal is to break the Oberlin indoor record for the 400-meter this season,” Petersen said. “I am not too concerned with winning races so much as I am with improving.” Following his lead, sophomore Shean Perry also finished third in the pole vault with a height of 13’00”.

Both of the 4x200-meter relay teams finished in fourth place. The men’s team ran a time of 1:37.05 and the Yeowomen finished with 1:56.75. The men’s 4x400-meter relay team then took fifth place with a time of 3:40.56.

On Jan. 31, the teams traveled to the NCAC Relays hosted by Wabash College in Crawfordsville, Indiana. The Yeowomen finished with a well earned third place, and the men’s team ended the meet in tenth place.

Collins and Houlihan were named NCAC Women’s Indoor Track and Field Event Athletes of the Week after jumping a combined 67’10.50”, setting a meet record for the triple jump relay. They took second and third place, with Collins scoring 35’05.25” and Houlihan reaching 33’08.50”.

The women’s 55-meter hurdles relay team took second in the competition. Houlihan placed third with 9.30 and Bosworth ran 9.61 for fifth place.

Perry again cleared 13’00” for third place in pole vaulting. First-years Quentin Jones and John Hepp had impressive performances. Jones finished fifth in the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 8.39. Hepp threw a 39’09.50” in the shotput for 11th place out of 21 of the conference’s top competitors.

The teams will compete at home this Friday at 6 p.m. in the Oberlin Invitational at Philips Gym.
