Men upset Denison
Victory keeps NCAC postseason hopes alive

On Wednesday evening, the Oberlin College men’s basketball team snapped a 12 game losing streak by defeating Denison University 70-61. While this win represents the lone victory in conference for the Yeomen to date, Oberlin managed to keep its slim chance of making the conference tournament alive by recording this key road victory.

Senior Cameron Leverett tied an Oberlin College all time record by hitting seven three-pointers in the same game. After the game, Leverett commented that, “It feels good because we won the game. It also felt good because we haven’t won in a while.”

When asked about the victory, head coach Frank “Happy” Dobbs praised the team’s maturity. “Last night we were much more consistent,” he said. “We played solid defense for 40 minutes and we hit open shots.”

In a back and forth game, the Yeomen proved on several different occasions that they would not quit. Both post players for the Yeomen, seniors Chris Ikpoh and Bosko Tomasevic, fouled out by the four minute mark of the second half.

Denison freshman Danny Hoggingson, who leads the conference in scoring for freshmen, aided both players’ exit before the final buzzer rang. “Danny is going to be a great player in the league,” Dobbs said. “He is going to be tough to handle.”

During Winter Term the Yeomen played ten games filled with frustration and missed opportunities. On several different occasions, Oberlin battled to the end only to lose by a basket. Consistency, which has been a problem all season, must prevail in the final two games for the Yeomen to clinch a spot in the conference championships.

Heading into the final stretch of the season, Ikpoh leads the team in scoring and in rebounds. First year Alex Malone has logged the most minutes for a first-year while Leverett leads the team by shooting 83% from the free throw line.

While the victory proved sweet for the Yeomen, they must now focus their attention back on business if they have any hopes of contending in the conference tournament. Oberlin will travel to Hiram College on Saturday, in search of their all important second conference victory, which would get them one step closer to the eighth and final spot of the postseason tournament.

“It’s going to be tough when you play on the road,” Dobbs said. “We are going to feel comfortable going up there after a road win.”
