Police release crash report

A partial police report regarding the deaths of juniors Zachary Tucker and Benjamin Caraco found that they were traveling south at about 93 mph before their accident on South Professor Street the night of Friday, Feb. 20.

The 2002 Volkswagen Jetta became airborne at the Plum Creek Bridge, traveling approximately one foot off the ground for about 50 feet, before making contact with the ground and losing control.

The car rotated counterclockwise, striking a tree on Old Barrows lawn, and split in half. The front section struck another tree and completed a full rotation before coming to rest on Old Barrows lawn. The back end of the car rested on the curb in front of Johnson House, across the street. Both students were killed on impact with the tree.

Toxicology reports found that Tucker, who was driving, had a blood alcohol content (BAC) of .147 as well as a small amount of Valium in his system. The state BAC limit is .08.

Tests found that Caraco had a BAC of .412. People can survive a BAC of .35, but even .25 can be critical to lethal, according to Lorain County coroner Paul Matus.

The car belonged to David Smolev (OC ’02). Smolev said he had loaned it to Caraco to go to his room in North dormitory sometime earlier that evening.
