Drag Ball history

To the Editors:

I was very happy to see the story about the upcoming Drag Ball in the previous issue, but there is one correction I must make.

While I was one of the individuals who did rejuvenate the Drag Ball in the early 90s, Michael Maccaferri was a co-organizer and driving force behind the event and the spectacular advertising campaign we built around it.

Any history of this event can not underestimate his contribution nor Chris Baymiller’s support, enthusiasm and organizational expertise. Drag Balls of all varieties have a rich history throughout the 20th century (and further back as well) and have played important cultural and political roles.

The Oberlin Drag Ball is part of this larger history in addition to emerging from the context of queer politics in the 1990s.

It is encouraging to hear that the tradition has continued, grown and become part of Oberlin’s character and history.
