Women’s lacrosse splits the week

The women’s lacrosse team scored several goals in the closing minutes against Ohio Wesleyan University in a conference match this Wednesday, but came up short, 16-10. However, the Yeowomen outplayed the Cazenovia Wildcats last Saturday in a non-conference match for a 19-5 win, bringing their record to 2-6 overall and 0-3 in conference play.

In an intense match on Wednesday, the team ended the first half with two points on the board, scored by junior April Gentile-Miserandino and sophomore Christine Castilla.

Castilla then scored the third goal four minutes into the second half.

“We are looking to give our conference opponents a run for their money and come up with some victories,” Castilla said.

The Yeowomen picked up the pace in the second half, racking up eight more goals.

With 15:19 left in the game, a dangerous check to the body was called on OWU while Oberlin held possession of the ball. Eight seconds later the Yeowomen put the ball in the back of the cage for their sixth goal.

“Our offense in particular has really come together and managed to capitalize on longer possession times,” junior Alice Powlen said.

Oberlin succeeded in scoring the last goal of the game with 2:19 on the clock, with OWU holding a seven-point lead.

In the game last Saturday, Powlen and Castilla led the team in goals, scoring five and four respectively. According to Powlen, the team came out strong in the Cazenovia game.

“[We] used our momentum to gain a huge lead in the first half,” Powlen said. “Our midfield transitions are coming together and we all are continuing to work on group ball pickups.”

Sophomore Elizabeth Sebien, senior co-captain Justine Strayhorn, first-year Janine Heiser and Gentile-Miserandino each scored two goals to assist in the victory over Cazenovia.

Seniors Susie Armitage and Meg Reitz also added one goal and two ground balls each while first-year Callie Group contributed six ground balls.

“We were able to accomplish the goals that we set such as maintaining possession, draw controls, ground balls and scoring,” Castilla said. “We played as a unit and capitalized on the other team’s weaknesses and mistakes.”

The Yeowomen will play SUNY-Brockport at home this coming Saturday at 2 p.m. in a non-conference match.
