Council finalizes wind energy buy

Oberlin City Council met on Tuesday night and voted not to pass a plan to buy a Chevrolet Blazer for the water division of the Public Works Department. Several council members had expressed curiosity as to why a four-wheel-drive vehicle was needed.

The first proclamation the council made thanked the city and the College for their participation in the America in Bloom beautification contest. Oberlin finished second nationally for its population bracket in the contest last year.

The second proclamation declared April Fair Housing month in the city of Oberlin to commemorate the history of fair housing in the city.

The council voted unanimously to approve a financing agreement with American Municipal Power for the construction of a wind turbine power-generation plant for the town.

The council also voted unanimously, though in some cases reluctantly, to accept the bid of Hi-Tech Building Services for janitorial services at City Hall.

Council members Eve Sandberg and Sharon Soucy both expressed regret that the Elyria-based company would receive the contract over the Oberlin-based ServiceMaster by Horton. The council resolved that in future meetings they would discuss methods by which local companies could be given priority for city contracts.

The council will meet next Tuesday to discuss the city’s comprehensive land-use plan.
