Women break 25 year record

The Oberlin College women’s tennis team picked up three wins while dropping only one game in a six-day period. The Yeowomen finished the week an impressive 12-5 overall and 5-2 in NCAC play.

Last Thursday, the Yeowomen defeated NCAC opponent Kenyon College 5-4. The victory was the first for the Yeowomen against Kenyon in 25 years.

The match began with junior Ary Amerikaner and first-year Bianca Barr winning in impressive fashion with a score of 8-1.

The second doubles team, junior Jessica Hauser and sophomore Kate Lurain, also pulled off a solid victory to give Oberlin a slight 2-1 advantage heading into singles play.

Amerikaner, Barr and Hauser also managed to win in singles play to clinch the close 5-4 victory over the visiting Ladies of Kenyon.

“The team really pulled together with some doubles wins,” senior Whitney Reichheld said.

The next day, Oberlin defeated Baldwin-Wallace College at home, 6-3. The third doubles tandem of Reichheld and sophomore Lesley Farber were the lone victors in doubles on the afternoon.

In singles, Oberlin won at three, four, five and six singles in easy fashion to coast to victory over a non-conference opponent.

On Saturday, the Yeowomen traveled to Allegheny College to take on the Gators in a conference match. Once again second doubles and third doubles won to give Oberlin a 2-1 advantage after doubles play. Two through six singles won going away to give the Yeowomen another conference victory.

With two days of rest, Oberlin traveled to play Denison University on Tuesday evening. Denison’s Big Red came into the match ranked fifth in the country with a lineup loaded with nationally and regionally ranked players.

The Big Red lived up to their billing as they dominated Oberlin in uncompromising fashion, 8-0.

While there was some good play by the Yeowomen, Denison demonstrated why they are one of the top teams in the nation by dismantling the talented Yeowomen squad.

The season will come to a close for the Yeowomen as they host the NCAC Championships Friday and Saturday at the tennis courts.

Oberlin will look to do better than its third consecutive fourth-place finish in the conference as they take on some top teams that may overlook them.

“We are coming in as the underdog, but we are really strong all the way down the line,” Reichheld said.
