Softball continues search for victory

Oberlin’s softball team played three conference doubleheaders last week, making things interesting during several late inning nail-biters but ultimately losing all six games during the final stretch.

Friday, the Yeowomen played Hiram College at home, losing both ends of their doubleheader, 4-2 and 9-1. Oberlin had one of the best showings of the year in the first game, taking Hiram into extra innings before giving up two runs and losing in the eighth inning.

“The games went really well, especially the first one,” senior third baseman Sarah Benjamin said. “We were winning the whole game and thought that we were going to pull out the victory.”

Junior Julia Daher had a double and an RBI and senior Anna Gardener-Andrews had a single and an RBI for Oberlin in the loss.

Taking the loss was sophomore pitcher Kate Oberg, who kept Hiram scoreless through six innings. The Yeowomen were up 2-0 by the seventh but surrendered two runs in the top of the inning and two in the eighth which toppled Oberg’s chance for the win.

The second game did not go as well but Daher kept her bat hot and was able to double and score Oberlin’s only run of the game on a single by sophomore Miriam Elfstrom.

Coming off of two disappointing losses, Oberlin took on Wittenberg University in another NCAC doubleheader on Sunday, April 18 at home.

In the first game Wittenberg scorched the ball, scoring early and often. Oberlin made occasional contact and scattered a few hits, but in the end couldn’t keep up with Wittenberg’s offensive binge. Oberlin dropped the first game 16-2.
Oberlin fared much better in the second game, playing strong defense, but nothing seemed to be enough to halt Wittenberg’s potent bats. Oberlin lost 8-1.

Tuesday, Oberlin traveled to Allegheny, Pa. for another NCAC doubleheader. In the first game Oberlin played well but couldn’t get the offense started, losing 7-1.

In the second game of the doubleheader, Oberlin was able to halt Allegheny’s offensive strikes with excellent pitching and solid work in the field. Oberlin kept the game close for all seven innings but lost 2-0.

Oberlin has two doubleheaders remaining on their schedule. On April 24th Oberlin travels to Denison University to play their last NCAC game of the season. The next day the Yeowomen play Lakeland Community College in their final regular season game.
