Track wins five at Wooster

Full form: First-year hurdler Quentin Jones looks to improve on his technique in practice.

The Oberlin outdoor track and field teams continued to improve in the standings in the North Coast Athletic Conference meet at Wooster College last Friday.

Some outstanding performances were turned in on the women’s side as junior Teresa Collins took first in two events.

“This past weekend was a good one,” head coach Jason Hudson said. “Collins won the 100m in 12.58, which is .2 from qualifying for nationals. This is amazing since the 100m is not her primary race.”

First-year Danielle Brooks ran one of her best times all year in the 100m as she took second behind Collins with 12.87. She was also part of the winning 4x100m relay team with Collins, senior Amber Coleman and junior Leslie Bosworth, who combined to run a time of 50.90.

Oberlin won three other individual events. In the 400m hurdles, Bosworth won with 1:07.55, while senior Shannon Houlihan claimed the lead in the 100m hurdles in 15.97 and triple jump with 10.96m and landed 4.74m for second in the long jump.

Senior Faye Doherty jumped 1.43m in the high jump for fourth place behind Houlihan, who reached 1.48m.

Former pole vault champion sophomore Shean Perry is slowly regaining his foothold in the event as he attempts to reclaim the conference title; he placed second at Wooster with a height of 4.11m. Perry wants to reach 14.6m this coming weekend.

He said, “I took a month off and once you take that much time away, it’s hard to get back into the groove. But after training more, now I’m strong enough and fast enough.”

Third, fourth and fifth in the 400m went to Oberlin as senior Jeremy Lane ran 52.11, first-year Micah Peterson finished with 52.26 and junior Dewayne Evans came in at 52.80.

Peterson also took fifth in 23.40 for the 200m dash. In the 800m run, another fifth place finish went to senior Brad Coryell who ran the event in 2:02.00.

First-year John Hepp finished in sixth place in the men’s javelin throw with a distance of 37.68m.

“All the work is done now we just need to fine tune things and get ready to compete,” Hudson said.

The teams will return to Wooster this Friday for a “tune up” meet and then compete in the multi-events portion of the conference meet this Saturday and Sunday. Next week they will to travel to Ohio Wesleyan University.
